Yealmpton Chairs

Handmade by Jeromy Rowett

In the 1990s, following twenty years' experience as a maker of furniture and musical instruments in London, Wiltshire and Devon, I revived the manufacture of Yealmpton Chairs in South Devon.

The chairs I produce are very close copies of the original Yealmpton Chairs produced in the village of Yealmpton in South Devon in the first half of the 19th century. They are made by hand, as the originals were, and replicate the light, flowing and elegant design, so much sought after. Much of the timber used is locally-sourced, and sawn to my specification by a traditional sawmill adjacent to my workshop.

The back is steamed and bent to shape and the seat is carved out for absolute comfort. The back sticks are flattened in section to allow a sprung structure, which makes these chairs very comfortable and durable. Click on one of the pictures below to see what these attractive chairs look like.

The Range

Yealmpton Chair High Stool Rocking Chair High Back Rocking Chair

The chairs feature bamboo-turned legs and arm-supports, sculpted seats and flattened back-sticks. Made from English Ash, a strikingly grained timber ideal for chair making, and produced in a variety of finishes to suit your tastes. Approximate seat height 17.25in. 44cm. The rocking chair is an adaptation of the original design, retaining the essential features and is ideal for relaxing in for long periods. As with the original Yealmpton Chair, it is made from English Ash, and has the same carved seat. It is available in a number of different finishes to suit you.

Tables

Designed to complement the chairs, picking up the design characteristics, the tables are made from English Ash and are available in several different finishes and sizes. Click here for order form and details.
